The school in the old Škoda Auto plant, with its extension, will open up to the city, expanding it with a new public space and a modern institution with student housing. The project is the first stage of a major urban plan for a new vibrant neighbourhood on the border between the factory and the city.
City block
The design of the Škoda Academy extension building is sensitively conceived in the composition of the existing buildings. The current building is dominant mainly because of its height and the main communication tower, which exceeds the surrounding buildings. In contrast, we mirror the proposed building axially according to the central part – the junction of the two buildings – and its mass is not bought into the height but into the area, in order to urbanise the whole block and give the public space its urban character. Together with the development of the surrounding area, we thus frame the future urban avenue.
The extensive specification for individual areas and the relatively large development area may lead to a simple solution that prioritises the built-up area and completely exhausts the capacity of the site.
However, thanks to the efficient design and clever arrangement of the individual spaces, as well as taking into account the demanding phasing of the development, the proposal is a compact building that creates short operational links, overall user clarity and at the same time a quality internal environment with an emphasis on sufficient daylight and attractiveness through contact with the outdoor environment and greenery. The flexibility of the design is reflected in the modularity of the support system, the layout and the design of the façade, so that the building is timeless and can quickly adapt to new requirements over decades of use without significant investment. Confident architecture with a sensitive scale – the proposed volume of the four-storey building with high floors and a total height of approximately 21 metres will be matched by six-storey buildings in the context of the surrounding development.
"Two faces of the building, internal green gardens and external adaptable façade"
At the same time, it is a school building combining specialized spaces, classrooms and office facilities, all within a unified architecture and visual design. The volumetric concept is the simplicity of form that complements the urbanism of the whole district, and the dominant element will be the omitted parts of the building, creating green atriums that illuminate the internal environment of the building. The seemingly massive scale is further refined by a modern active façade, which can reflect the internal use on a module-by-module basis. The building can thus change its face every hour by opening or closing individual façade panels.
