Design of a new learning centre 3. of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University combines rational architecture with elegant design, offering a pleasant environment for mass teaching, self-study and relaxation throughout the year. The proposed solution respects the existing urban structure and integrates green areas, creating a harmonious space that serves mainly students.
School agora
The design of the teaching centre is based on the pavilion layout of the State Medical Institute. It is proposed to preserve the greenery as much as possible by raising the garden above the ground floor and creating a rooftop residential garden. The ground floor, with its more public functions, is partially sunken into the ground and incorporated into the restored fencing and tree planting on the south side. On a green pedestal stands the receding three-storey university pavilion with classrooms and a glazed façade. The larger pedestal and receding pavilion visually reduce the volume of the building with its otherwise rich internal programme and light-filled atrium.
"An oasis for self-study, relaxation and socialising in all seasons."
The agora with its residential stairs, which runs up to the entrance hall and library of the new teaching centre, is the new centrepiece of the 3rd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University. The overlooks in the symbolic fencing towards the agora and the university library open up the university campus to its surroundings. The shade trees and furnishings will make this representative public space a pleasant place to meet, study and relax at any time of year.
