The existing building, originally a First Republic guesthouse, currently serves as a home for the elderly. The investor’s requirement is to expand the capacity of the existing building.
The proposed extension of the existing building is deliberately different from the existing building in its expression – a simple mass with a functional facade structure together with the materials used (exposed concrete). The resulting contrast makes its historical style stand out and reduces the adverse effects of later modifications. The proposed location of the extension next to the existing building, together with their connection only through a glass neck, does not disturb the integrity of the original building and creates a dialogue between the old and the new, in which the new building does not try to look dominant or parasitise the existing solution, but on the contrary tries to be its equal partner within a harmonious whole.
